After the Hunt

What can I say about Luca Guadagnino’s new drama After the Hunt? It has some of the most pretentious, condescending, full of themselves characters I can remember, but played by some of the greatest stars working in Hollywood today. We have two university professors of philosophy Alma (Julia Roberts) and Hank (Andrew Garfield) at Yale who are heavily involved in campus politics, being among the most elite in higher education. The movie has a theme of questioning cancel culture and wokeness and does it in a very heavy-handed way. The story focuses on Maggie, a PhD student (Ayo Edebiri of The Bear, Opus and Bottoms) who is a close admirer of these two professors and unfortunately gets a little too close to Hank and must decide whether to report his assaulting her to the administration but first must seek Alma’s advice. So, the characters get into questions about the MeToo movement and the impact of these accusations on their futures. Questions also arise about Maggie’s integrity as she is accused of plagiarism so there is plenty of bad behavior to go around. Alma’s husband (Michael Stuhlbarg), a therapist, is included with those with annoying behavior without being detestable other than his questioning Maggie’s motives. Before it’s all over there will be suffering and destroyed careers as a result of bad behavior. All the actors give excellent performances, but of very flawed people that one has no empathy for. I did not enjoy this movie. Guadagnino has made some good movies lately that include Queer, Challengers and Bones and All. Unfortunately, After the Hunt won’t be among them. It generally has not been getting good reviews. (Incidentally, if you like horror movies check out Suspiria by Guadagnino.)

The Smashing Machine

The Smashing Machine by writer director Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems, Daddy Longlegs) is the recently released biopic about the life of Mark Kerr, the mixed martial arts star of the nineties and early 2000’s. It is not a conventional sports movie where a team or individual overcomes the challenges of their sport and triumphs in the end. Instead, the film focuses mostly on the character of Kerr (played by Dwayne Johnson, the former wrestling star and movie action hero, but forget about Red One) and the struggles he faces in his life within the sport and in his personal life. A few fights are represented, but they only take up a small portion of the total screen time, so don’t expect an MMA version of Rocky. I don’t know much about the sport that became the UFC, but it seems like the objective is to tackle your opponent, hold him on the floor while you beat him in the face turning it into a bloody mess until he gives up. (At least this is what I took from it. The nation will get a first-hand look at UFC next year when it will be featured on the White House lawn on the occasion of President Trump’s eightieth birthday.) Much of the film has the look of being a documentary using long takes, making it seem like you are watching the real Mark Kerr. It shows us the various sides of him. As played by Johnson he is the nicest guy you can imagine while dealing with the public. He is polite in the extreme to the average person, being very humble and restrained. But when he loses a fight for the first time and then only focuses on his next fight he becomes completely absorbed, shutting out those around him. This gets to be a problem for his girlfriend, Dawn (Emily Blunt) as she comes to resent Kerr’s silence at these times. Much of the story is about these two people who can’t understand each other and who question the motives of the other’s decisions. The role of Dawn is a complete change from how we are used to seeing Blunt. Normally, her characters are of women who are adventurous and in complete control of their lives. Here Blunt is not her normal movie star self (think The Fall Guy and Jungle Cruise) but has an understated presence and is subservient to boyfriend Kerr. It is a testament to her acting talents that she can blend into the feel of the movie so effectively. Blunt may be in line for an acting Academy Award nomination for this role. There also seems to be talk of Johnson getting an acting nomination as well. It would be well deserved. The film is recommended, but again you shouldn’t expect a lot of action leading up to a traditional final climactic finish. (I hope I’m not giving too much away, but what kind of sports movie has the winner being awarded the trophy because of a cancelled final match?) You should go to see a person dealing with setbacks in their life and finding a way to get through them.

One Battle After Another

It’s only October and I feel I may have seen one of the Best Picture nominees or even the Best Picture with Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another. Anderson, the master storyteller (remember Licorice Pizza, Phantom Thread and There Will Be Blood) has created a film that is part social commentary and part family saga. It tackles matters that are relevant to today’s social situations and has some exceptional heart pounding action sequences. The main story follows an ex-revolutionary figure named Pat or Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his sixteen-year-old daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti in her first movie role) as they try to escape an enemy from their past, a certain army colonel named Lockjaw (Sean Penn) who is trying to hunt them both down. But first we must learn what led to this situation through the first part of the movie. Bob and Perfidia (Teyana Taylor) are part of an anti-establishment revolutionary group called the French 75, a loosely organized group of freedom fighters who try to free detained undocumented aliens and cause general chaos through destructive actions. Perfidia is one of leaders of the group while Bob has skills with explosives. Their actions could fit in almost any time period, but here it seems to be the early 2000’s. They run afoul of Colonel Lockjaw, a hardnosed tough as nails army officer with a really bad haircut who literally has a hard-on for black chicks. He is also part of a secret Neo-Nazi white supremacist society (called the Christmas Adventurers Club) which creates a conflict when he meets Perfidia during one of the 75’s missions. Pat and Perfidia have a baby daughter, who they are raising together that is, until most of the gang gets rolled up after a bank heist, including Perfidia. She is convinced to reveal names by Lockjaw and is placed into witness protection only to flee into the wind. Sixteen years go by during which time the gang goes dormant and Bob must live off the grid while raising the baby, now named Willa on his own. Bob is no criminal mastermind and by now has become a stoner regularly getting high and drunk. Other than his skills with explosives, he is not good for much. But DiCaprio is very convincing as a father who has a real attachment to his daughter. Bob has a real problem when he is alerted through his underground contacts that the authorities are on to them and he and Willa will need to disappear. Fortunately for Bob, there are still a few members of the group around that can help keep him and Willa out of the hands of the government. They include Sensai Sergio St. Carlos (Benicio del Toro also of Inherent Vice) and Deandra (Regina Hall of The Hate U Give) who finds Willa and gets her out of harm’s way (at least for a while). The latter part of the movie is very intense as Bob and Willa try to stay one step ahead of Lockjaw’s soldiers who are closing in. The scenes are aided by a fast-moving original score by Johnny Greenwood. The audience will really be glued to the screen during two car chase scenes, with an outcome that is not expected. (Also, look for Alana Haim in a small role. Anderson featured her in his film, Licorice Pizza.) I fully expect One Battle After Another to earn several Academy Award nominations. It could be Paul Thomas Anderson’s best to date. Do not miss it.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues

It has been forty-one years since director Marty DiBergi brought us the documentary (or rockumentary) This is Spinal Tap that followed the legendary rock band Spinal Tap as they went on a meandering tour facing some rocky times and ended with a peculiar performance of their hit Stone Henge. The three rockers: Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins and Derek Smalls continued to perform, but eventually, fifteen years ago they split up and went their separate ways having not spoken to one another in all that time. But ultimately, these talents couldn’t stay apart and started to explore the possibility of returning to the stage for an ultimate performance. That’s where Marty picks things up and follows their journey once more. The resulting sequel captures many moments of them reuniting in New Orleans where Nigel, David and Derek discuss the future of the group and rehearse for the big show. (The house they choose to rehearse in is thought to be haunted and is open to tours.) There are certainly some familiar things about them that many can remember from the original documentary including their odd sound system (“It goes up to eleven!”) and the many arguments and conflicts between them. This time there is a foot pedal contraption that goes beyond ridiculous. David and Nigel once again start their comical open hostility over the chords in a song they are writing. They even get Paul McCartney, who stops by for a visit, to (accidentally) join the arguments! There are some familiar faces that they run in to including Bobbi Flekman “The hostess with the mostest” and Artie Fufkin. Their manager has passed away so now it is his daughter, Hope Faith who assumes the manager role. You may remember the trouble that the band had finding a drummer because they keep dying in peculiar ways. (We learn that they lost a total of eleven drummers.) This time around they find a very talented drummer named Didi Crockett who fills the role. There are many chuckles in the movie, but it’s not exactly gut busting. Back in the eighties the group had a real over-the-top approach to things and their music was actually good. Now the aging rock stars are shadows of their former selves, but still fun to have around. They perform some of their hits that include All the Way Home, Hell Toupee and Listen to the Flower People. Be sure to stick around till the end. Do you remember the mini Stone Henge in the original movie? Well, it makes a return appearance in the final act and it is a real showstopper for sure!

Caught Stealing

Caught Stealing                 4 ½ stars

Caught Stealing is the latest movie directed by Darren Aronofsky and it is one wild ride. I have seen all but one of his movies and have to say they vary greatly in style. Some of them have a surrealistic tone like Pi, The Fountainhead, Black Swan and mother!. Others are more down-to-earth dealing with the fragile nature of a character like The Wrestler and The Whale. Caught Stealing is neither of those, it being a more conventional story about a single individual finding himself in a tough situation. The movie is set in 1998 lower east side of New York City and has a very gritty feel to it. Hank (the very versatile Austin Butler) at twenty something was a promising prospect for major league baseball until he got into a car wreck, destroying his knee and killing his best friend. Now he is a bar tender working in a dive bar, but he worships the San Francisco Giants from his home state of California where his mother still lives. He is still constantly haunted by the accident that destroyed his career. Now things are going ok for Hank, and he often hooks up with his girlfriend Yvonne (Zöe Kravitz) who is an EMT. That is until his next-door neighbor, Russ, an English punk rocker takes off to England and leaves his pet cat, Bud for Hank to care for. The movie takes a sharp turn in tone at this point, becoming more of an action thriller. When a gang of Russian thugs finds Russ is not around they find Hank and give him a brutal beating putting him in the hospital because they think he is connected to Russ. Suddenly, Hank finds that he is the target of every local gangster in the neighborhood including not only the Russians, but Puerto Ricans and Hasidic Jews. At one point he goes to the police for help, finding Detective Roman (Academy Award winner Regina King in a very different role), but that doesn’t bring any help. With seemingly everyone against him, Hank must take matters into his own hands and find a way out of this mess that he never asked for. There are some unexpected twists that poor Hank must deal with in creative ways including using a device he is well acquainted with, a baseball bat. I don’t want to give anything away but will tell you to watch for the star cast that includes Matt Smith, Vincent D’Onofrio and Liev Schreiber. They are virtually unrecognizable so pay attention. There is even a role for Carol Kane (Between the Temples) that is a real treat. But the movie really belongs to Austin Butler who has distinguished himself in Elvis, The Bikeriders, Dune: Part Two as well as a small role in Eddington. He has shown he has the charisma and acting skills needed to put him in the higher echelons of Hollywood actors. Watch for him in his next project: Enemies, a crime drama.
 

The Roses

The Roses                           4 stars

It has been 36 years since we saw Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in that classic comedy The War of the Roses when the married Roses viciously attacked each other with verbal insults and worse as their marriage descended into mayhem. So naturally it was due for an update according to writer Tony McNamara (Poor Things, The Favourite) and director Jay Roach (Bombshell and three rounds of Austin Powers). This time around it is Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman taking on the roles of Theo and Ivy Rose, the married British couple in a decaying marriage that they cannot escape from. Early on we get a taste of what we’re in for when the two of them are in a session with a marriage counselor and the two of them are asked to list ten things they like about each other. Theo says of Ivy, “I’d rather live with her than a wolf.” Ivy’s compliment to Theo is “He has arms.” after she has just seen a documentary about a man living without arms. It gets worse from there with some imaginative use of some swear words. Then we cut to the time they first met at a restaurant where Ivy was working and the two of them end up in a walk-in freezer having sex. From there we flash forward several years and see that they have two children and have moved to northern California where Theo is a successful architect and has designed a new maritime museum. Ivy does dinners for small gatherings, but dreams of opening a restaurant. Big changes come when she succeeds in starting a wildly popular restaurant and becomes famous, while Theo loses his job after he is blamed for the destruction of the museum in a storm. That’s when things start to go badly between them with Theo seemingly resenting Ivy’s success while he has become a stay-at-home Dad. The verbal jabs between them get ever more creative and vicious while their circle of friends become very uncomfortable with the language. The friends include married couple Barry (SNL’s Andy Samberg) and Amy (SNL’s Kate McKinnon) making for a very amusing duo. Also among the cast are Ncuti Gatwa of Doctor Who and Sunita Mani (Death of a Unicorn). Alison Janney completely takes over one scene as Ivy’s attorney when Theo and Ivy take their disagreements to the highest level. The casting of Cumberbatch and Colman was masterful, as they make you believe in their love/hate relationship throughout the movie. Credit must be given to screenwriter Tony McNamara for coming up with so many insults that are almost poetic. The Roses is definitely a dark comedy, though I will leave it up to you to decide if it is as dark as the original The War of the Roses.

Honey Don’t

Honey O’Donoghue is a female private detective solving cases in and around Bakersfield California where she mainly sees clients who need to know if their spouse or partner is cheating on them. The movie poster says “She only has two desires and one of them is justice”. It doesn’t take long before you figure out what the other one is. Margaret Qualley is Honey in Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke’s new film Honey Don’t. She is a rock-solid detective almost like that of a Raymond Chandler private eye who talks like one of those B movie film noir detectives out of the forties. Her one weakness is that she can’t turn down flirtatious women and often ends up in the sack with them. As the movie begins O’Donoghue becomes involved in a case of a fatal car accident in the desert where one of her potential clients has been found dead. A local police officer, Marty Metakawitch (Charlie Day) on the scene believes it to be a simple car accident, but O’Donoghue thinks there is more to it. A running gag in the film is Marty asking Honey to join him in a drink, but she says “I Like Girls” to which the clueless Marty says “You always say that.” It doesn’t take long until more murders are discovered, and O’Donoghue finds leads that indicate that a local church called the Four-Way Temple may be somehow involved. The church is led by the Reverend Drew Devlin (Chris Evans) who is a real douchebag who likes to engage his female parishioners in sex and has some side businesses going on too that sometimes require the elimination of certain problems. During her investigations Honey encounters MG Falcone (Aubrey Plaza), a female police officer who also happens to be gay and Honey does not miss the opportunity. (But don’t worry. The sex scenes are pretty tame.) Honey also has a sister who has a large brood of children which Honey is very protective of. All of the female characters seem to have one thing in common and that is having bad relationships with their fathers, especially true for Honey and her sister. When one of the sister’s girls (who was beaten by her idiot boyfriend) goes missing, O’Donoghue pays the boyfriend a visit in his trailer asking where she is. Not getting a good answer, Honey gives him what he deserves and let’s just say you had better not mess around with Honey. Like other Coen movies there is plenty of ironic violence and moronic villains to go around. The movie falls apart somewhat due to a plot that isn’t quite coherent. I felt there were some things being left out leaving it less than satisfying. But I will say that Margaret Qualley’s performance makes up for the film’s shortcomings. I would love to see her in a sequel. She has been in some great roles including those in Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, Poor Things and The Substance. This movie by Coen and Cooke (who is Ethan Coen’s wife) is the second in a planned B-movie trilogy that are centered around lesbian characters. The first was last year’s Drive-Away Dolls that also starred Qualley as a girl on a road trip with her very uptight friend. (Along the way they encounter some very inept crooks and an all-lesbian soccer team.) It is one that I recommend. The third installment is still in the works. I have no idea what Coen and company have in mind yet, but I will certainly watch for it. Also, I am convinced that I have no need to visit Bakersfield, California.

Superman

Superman                           4 ½ stars

I finally joined the rest of the world by viewing the new James Gunn take on America’s oldest superhero Superman. This movie takes the very familiar story of the man from planet Krypton who came to Earth and fights criminals and super beings using his super abilities while wearing his familiar red cape and S sign on his chest while updating it for the twenty-first century. The first indication of differences comes at the very start with text on the screen revealing that “metahumans” first appeared on Earth three centuries ago. Then we learn that Superman (David Corenswet of Twisters) has just been defeated by an armored being called the Hammer of Boravia. The broken Superman is left badly beaten in the Antarctic where fortunately he is rescued by his cute companion Krypto, a misbehaving dog with superpowers who also wears a red cape. He is quite an amusing addition and undoubtedly a favorite with the audience. Superman is quickly rejuvenated thanks to his robots and facilities at the Fortress of Solitude. We soon learn that Superman’s troubles are due to his arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult of Mad Max: Fury Road and The Current War), the CEO of a mega corporation that has been selling billions of dollars in arms to the country of Boravia (clearly a stand in for Russia). We can see clearly that this is a case of the good guy, Superman against the bad guy, though that is not apparent to the public yet. Earlier, Superman became embroiled in world politics when he prevented Boravia from invading their next-door neighbor, Jarhanpur, an act which seems to have set public opinion against him. Luthor adds to Supermen’s distress when he is able to portray Superman as a power-hungry alien with strategically placed propaganda. We get to meet many familiar characters in Metropolis including Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), the Daily Planet reporter who already knows Superman’s alias identity as Clark Kent and is romantically involved with him. She even interviews Superman in a lengthy scene that reveals just how complex the political situation has become and that Supermen may not have considered all the implications of his actions. Also present are reporter Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) and Perry White (Wendell Pierce), the newspaper editor. Unlike earlier Superman movies, this version goes much more into the sci-fi aspects of the story, resembling the old comic books of the fifties and sixties. Luthor has a whole team of tech geniuses working for him and advanced weapons including a female “engineer” (Maria Gabriela de Faria) who has buzzsaws for hands and can act as a human computer server. And he has constructed access to a pocket universe where he can hide from the world’s governments and maintain his own prison where he holds anyone that he thinks has wronged him (even old girlfriends). All is not gloomy for Superman though as he has some allies on his side. There is a comical team of superheroes called “The Justice Gang” as that is the best name they have come up with so far. This unruly crew includes the Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion having a blast), alias Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi of The Harder They Fall) who has an assortment of high-tech gadgets, and Hawkgirl (Isabella Merced). Another superhero, Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan) who can transform into any element, later comes to Superman’s aid and he needs it when the threats become too much for Superman to handle alone. Gunn, the creator of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, has given us a complex and entertaining take on a very familiar subject. The cast especially is first rate making some interesting characters, most notably Corenswet as an emotional Superman dedicated to doing the right thing, Brosnahan as a smart Lois Lane and Hoult who makes an especially menacing villain with his bald head. While most movie fans have been enjoying the film, there is a set of those on the far-right that are criticizing the film for emphasizing Superman’s status as an alien refugee who is in America illegally. For them, the commonly known elements of the story are too woke to be included. Fortunately, this view is limited to a small group of the anti-immigrant set. The rest of us can enjoy a traditional story of the good guys triumphing over the bad guys.

Eddington

Do you remember what life was like back in 2020, in the time of COVID, the mask mandates, the social distancing and the countless demonstrations for Black Lives Matter? Would you like to revisit that time? Well, in Ari Aster’s new comedy western, Eddington, we get to do just that from the point of view of rural America where there was deep resentment over government mandates and where conspiracy theories proliferated like weeds. Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix (Joker and Beau is Afraid)) is the sheriff of Eddington, New Mexico in May of 2020 when the reaction to COVID is in full swing. He must deal with the anger of the locals along with the normal disturbances. Besides this, he has trouble at home with his depressed wife, Louise (Emma Stone (Poor Things)) who makes creepy-looking dolls and his mother-in-law, Dawn (Deirdre O’Connell (Diane)), who is fascinated by conspiracy theories. There are protests going on in the streets shortly after the George Floyd incident, led by some of the local activists resulting in confrontations with the police. The mayor of the town is Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal (Materialists and Gladiator II)) who is very full of himself. He is trying to get a high-tech company to build a factory in Eddington as that will make him look good. Garcia believes in the mask mandates, but Sheriff Joe wants nothing to do with them. Joe has arguments with Garcia as well as with the employees at the local supermarket. There are rumors that Joe’s wife, Louise, had some sexual history with Garcia and now she is spending time with a self-help guru crackpot (Austin Butler), who has her under his spell. All this is enough to make a person snap and for Sheriff Joe it’s enough to make him want to run against Garcia in the upcoming mayoral election. You may have seen Ari Aster’s earlier movies, Midsommar, about an American couple visiting a violent cult in Sweden, or Hereditary, about a family investigating the terrifying past of their family. If so, then you might have an idea of what you are in for. The movie progresses into a murder thriller expanding into utter mayhem. The characters face some harrowing and confusing experiences that they may or may not have been responsible for. It is all very exciting for the audience but probably goes on for too long. Aster’s movie is ultimately about America’s cry for help in a very troubling time and what a mess we have made of things. You can choose for yourself whether this appeals to you. I find that I am a fan of Aster, so I was thrilled to see it.

28 Years Later

28 Years Later                    5 stars

It has been a long time since Great Britain was overrun by hordes of infected rampaging humans hungry for flesh in Danny Boyle’s (127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire) 28 Days Later. That movie was a survivalist story of a few remaining sane humans trying to survive against the angry zombie like creatures that inhabit the island kingdom. Fortunately, humanity was able to limit the disease from spreading to the rest of the world, leaving Britain in a state of quarantine. In the just out sequel, 28 Years Later, Boyle and his collaborator Alex Garland bring us back to this hellscape to see what has transpired in the intervening years. But first we must be brought up to date with scenes of what happened in the first place when the rampage started. We visit a house where the infected overrun a family and one young boy named Jimmy escapes only to see the village priest torn apart by the horde. Scenes of battling and destruction are accompanied by a horrifying 1915 reading of a Rudyard Kipling poem with a steady escalating beat. (You should look up the trailer on YouTube.) Finally, we come to the present on a small island off the coast of Britain where the inhabitants carry on isolated from the rest of the world, constantly on guard against the threat on the mainland. In this community we meet 12-year-old Spike (newcomer Alfie Williams), his father Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson of Nosferatu and Bullet Train) and mother Isla (Jodie Comer of The Bikeriders). It is time for Spike to go on his first hunt on the mainland, with his father to hunt down and kill the infected. They are told that once they leave the island there are no rescue parties. On the mission, we find out that there are now varieties of infected people. There are the sprinting dead who rush madly at their target. There are the starving dead who look like skin covered skeletons. There are the crawlers, who are extremely overweight and can only crawl on the ground and eat worms, but still attack people. Then there are the Alpha’s who are like a new superior species of humans who only flinch when they are hit square with an arrow. After this brief adventure when father and son return to their island having killed a few of the loonies, Spike is very concerned about his sick mother and learns of a legendary old doctor who stayed on the mainland. Since there is no such thing as a doctor on the island, Spike believes that finding this doctor could save his mother from dying, so off to the mainland go Spike and Mom, unknown to poor Dad. Eventually after surviving more attacks, they do find the old doctor whose name is Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes of Schindler’s List) who brings a sense of wisdom, morality and politeness to the movie. Even his monuments to the dead, built out of human bones, bring us a reassuring feeling. Up to this point it was all paranoia as the characters had to endure one frenzied attack after another from the crazed infected beings who are always naked. (After 28 years nobody wants to deal with putting on clothes anymore.) The doctor’s outlook brings a sense of hope and optimism to the crazy world we see in the movie. Before 28 Days Later, zombie movies were something of a rarity being restricted to the George Romero variety. Since then, they have become quite commonplace. But 28 Years Later applies a real sense of art to the subject even if the choices made by the characters often make little sense. I have read that 28 Years Later is to be followed up with two sequels starting with The Bone Temple next year. So, let’s see what Danny Boyle and company have planned for us. I’ll be watching for it!
